Frequently Asked Questions
What is the evaluation process like?
Based on what we have discussed in the initial consultation, I will craft a holistic, child centered, family focused evaluation that will consist of several questionnaires parents fill out, standardized assessments that look like play for your child and a thorough discussion about the goals you have for your child. Usually a 2-3 hour block of time is allotted for evaluations to allow your child to get comfortable with me and to allow natural play to reveal skills and strengths.
Following the evaluation, you will receive a detailed report and we will have a (hopefully) in person meeting or zoom meeting to go over results and next steps. Sometimes those next steps look like weekly OT and sometimes they look like starting with parent coaching/support.
Do you accept insurance?
Flourish Occupational Therapy is a fee-for-service provider. This allows us the flexibility to see your child where we need to, how often/much is necessary and using any and all strategies/resources needed to make progress towards goals. We all know that insurance can be extremely challenging to work with so by taking insurance out of the equation, it allows us the freedom and flexibility to make the best plan of care for your child and family.
What types of diagnoses and children do you see?
First I will say there are many children that benefit from OT that do not have any formal diagnosis. OT is all about building the skills children need to thrive in their home, school and play environments. Some of those skills are social emotional regulation skills, sensory processing skills, fine and gross motor skills and/or visual perceptual skills.
For children with a diagnosis, some of the diagnoses I see are children with ADHD, Autism, sensory processing challenges, Down syndrome and other chromosomal differences, cerebral palsy, traumatic/non-traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury and pediatric stroke.
What does a nature based OT session look like?
Depending on the OT goals, age of the child and the setting of the session, the therapist and child create a plan at the start of each session to set the expectations and trajectory of the session.
Nature based therapy easily lends itself to a playful and engaging therapy experience that facilitates deep and meaningful play between the therapist and child. Some sessions will involve the natural resources of the outside environment and sometimes I bring items that will target specific skills we are targeting.
I will almost always have some sort of swing or hammock hung up in the trees as well. I welcome parents to stay and be active participants whenever possible. I also would welcome sibling involvement when and if it works towards stated therapy goals.
Where do sessions meet?
I have several parks and trail heads that I know well and am comfortable at in Longmont and Boulder. I try to tailor the outdoor setting to the skills and strengths of your child. Sessions will be rescheduled due to extreme cold and/or significant wind.
What is the communication method between parents and therapist?
Flourish OT uses a signed Business Associate Account that ensures our email correspondences are HIPAA protected. We also use a Google classroom to have full transparency with session notes as well as to share other relevant resources. The most common types of resources shared are pertinent podcasts, research articles, blog posts and anything else that furthers achievement towards OT goals.
